Lake District & Yorkshire






This itinerary takes in three National Parks, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District together with the historic and beautiful City of York.

Day one

Arrive at Manchester Airport. Meet & greet. Drive to Lake District National Park. Time permitting stop at Levens Hall an Elizabethan Mansion with famous topiary gardens. The Lake District contrasts the scenery of steep mountains with lush green valleys, tranquil lakes and pretty villages. The area is been beloved of poets, writers and artists.

Day two

Visit Hill Top a tiny cottage where the famous childrenís author, Beatrix Potter wrote many of her stories including those about Peter Rabbit. The house is surrounded by an English cottage garden. Later visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery which exhibits the originals of many of the authorís illustrations and spend some time in the village of Sawrey or shopping and lunch.
Later a scenic drive along the shores of Lake Ullswater and then over the spectacular, mountainous Kirkstone Pass for magnificent views of the Lake District National Park. Time for shopping in Windermere.

Day three

Today visit the village of Grasmere where you can buy freshly baked gingerbread and visit Dove Cottage the home of the famous Lakeland poet, William Wordsworth. Later drive to Coniston Water and take a cruise on the steam yacht, Gondola. First launched in 1859 she has now been completely restored. Visit the lovely house of Brantwood, home of the Victorian writer and artist John Ruskin. The house is in a beautiful location and displays many of Ruskinís lovely paintings. There are lovely gardens and a craft shop.

Day four

This morning leave the Lake District and drive over the mountains of the Yorkshire Dales, this lovely, isolated, countryside with its steep valleys was the setting for the vet stories by James Herriot. Arrive in York this afternoon. York is a beautiful, medieval city which still has its ancient city walls and is dominated by the beautiful cathedral, York Minster.
Enjoy a walking tour or carriage ride to familiarise yourself with the City.

Day five

Today make a tour of York Minster and climb to the top of the tower to see the views. Also visit the excellent Yorvik Viking Museum on the site of a recent archeological discovery of a complete Viking Village. This is a fascinating visit where you are taken back in time through the village on a little train.
Time for shopping and/or drive to visit Castle Howard one of the great treasure houses of England.

Day six

Leave York this morning and drive to the hillside town Haworth with its cobbled street. Here you can visit the Bronte Parsonage and Museum where the famous Bronte sisters lived and wrote their famous novels, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Time to explore the town and maybe have lunch in the Black Bull, a favourite place of Bramwell Bronte.
Later travel into the Peak District National Park with its gentle rolling countryside, wooded slopes and rounded hills to visit Chatsworth House. This is one of Englandís most beautiful stately homes, famous for its magnificent collection of art. Visit the elegant old spa town of Buxton, the highest town in England before arriving at your private home accommodation.

Transfer to Manchester Airport.
